Lawyer Saiful Islam's murder sparks legal action, 31 named in case

A case has been filed following the brutal killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif during a violent confrontation in Chattogram. The victim's father, Jamal Uddin, lodged a formal complaint at Kotwali Police Station late Friday night, which was registered early Saturday.

The case lists 31 individuals as accused, with an additional 10-15 unidentified persons implicated. The Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations), Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz, confirmed the development.

Prominent names in the case include Chandan, Aman Das, Subho Kanti Das, Bunja, Ronob, Bidhan, Bikash, Nayan Das, Gagan Das, Vishal Das, Omkar Das, Rajkapur, Lal, Samir, Sohel Das, Shiv Kumar, and Rajib Bhattacharya. Among them, Subho Kanti Das, a law student at BGC Trust University, has been expelled after allegations of his involvement surfaced. Other accused individuals reportedly reside in the Patharghata Sebok Colony and Bundle Road areas under the Kotwali jurisdiction.

The violent clash erupted Tuesday after Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a spokesperson for the United Sanatan Awakening Alliance, was denied bail in a sedition case. As he was being transferred to prison, over a thousand of his followers blocked the road and staged protests. Law enforcement, including police, SWAT, and BGB personnel, intervened using batons and sound grenades to disperse the crowd.

During the confrontation, Saiful Islam was reportedly hacked to death by Brahmachari’s supporters. Authorities have since arrested 39 individuals linked to the violence, which included obstructing law enforcement, attacking security personnel, and the murder of the lawyer.

Police continue their investigation into the incident, which has drawn widespread attention and condemnation across the region.
